HLEB CLINCH BARCELONA MOVES

Alexander Hleb has completed his undisclosed fee that could reach an £11.8 million switch to Barcelona from Arsenal.

The 27-year-old Belarus midfielder had a medical in the Spanish city on Wednesday and he described his move to the La Liga giant as "a dream".

"I love this team," said Hleb. "I will give my best and I want to win everything with Barca."

Hleb arrived at the Nou Camp on the day that Brazil star Ronaldinho was in Milan having a medical as he prepared to leave the Spanish side.

On Hleb’s departure, Arsène Wenger said:

“We must firstly thank Alex for his contribution towards Arsenal Football Club during his time with us. Alex played a significant role in the three seasons he was with the Club. We are comfortable with our decision to let him go and we are all looking forward to continuing our preparations for the new season ahead.”

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva will become the highest paid player in Greece when he completes his move to Panathinaikos.

According to Greek sports radio station Sport FM, the Brazilian star is expected to arrive in Athens on Wednesday afternoon to complete a medical and put pen to paper on his contract which was agreed by the player's representatives last week.

He is then expected to be presented to the media on Thursday.

PAO president Nikos Pateras met with Gilberto's representatives last week and thrashed out a deal after making an offer of around £1million to Arsenal on Friday.

Barring any last-minute changes, the World Cup winner will ink a deal that will see him earn around £6million over the next three years, making him by far the best paid player in the country in a move which will cost Pana almost £8million in total.

Juventus are eyeing Arsenal attacker Robin van Persie.

Tuttosport says Juve see the Dutch ace as an ideal replacement for veteran Pavel Nedved.

The Bianconeri intend to move for Van Persie next summer and rate the forward in the £18 million class.

The agent of Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has confirmed Arsenal's interest.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is in the market for a midfielder after losing Mathieu Flamini, while Gilberto Silva is set to join Panathinaikos.

"The player knows about this subject and now the decision lies with Liverpool," Inaki Ibanez told Publico.

A source close to Alonso said: "If the decision was down to Xabi, he would make the move because Arsenal's style is perfect for him."

While at the same time Arsenal are expected to make a bid for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry too.

Wenger has let it be known to the club's hierarchy that he rates the England midfielder highly and rarely discloses the identity of a transfer target until he is reasonably certain that he is sure of the player's suitability. His Villa counterpart, Martin O'Neill, confirmed this week that Arsenal have made a preliminary inquiry.

The key factor is whether Arsenal will pay the £18m fee that has proved such a sticking point for Liverpool.

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has defended Arsene Wenger's transfer policy.

He said: "Buying a whole lot of stars and hoping to mould them together is one way of doing it, but it is not Arsene's way.

"He prefers to build long-term as best he can and develop young players in the way he wants them to play. I am personally very much in favour of that."
Arsenal, though, are unwilling to go head to head with the other big Premier League three in terms of wages and transfer fees, as they look to maintain a strict wage structure and balance the books following their £350million move to the Emirates Stadium, which has been funded in a large part by a long-term fixed-rate debt repayment.

Hill-Wood, though, insists such tough decisions are a necessity.

He said: "Maybe people need to be waking up to the realities of the world and that the days of easy money have come to a pretty sudden end.

"There is an awful lot of talk about big transfers and major demands of players, but you will find throughout the UK and Europe that money is not quite as easy to obtain as it used to be."

Hill-Wood added: "A lot of people don't seem to realise that in the long run you must run a football club on a sensible commercial basis.

"A lot of the figures bandied around at the moment don't make commercial sense to us. That is what disappoints me, that people are prepared to do what can be construed as very silly things."
