ARSENAL GREATEST 50 GOALS

Arsenal.com has revealed the Gunners' Greatest 50 Goals from the past 40 years - as voted by you.

Voting closed on Friday, May 22 2009. The results countdown started on Monday, June 8 2009, when the 50th Greatest Goal is unveiled. The Gunners' Greatest Goal then revealed on Friday, July 31 2009.

Arsenal's supporters have voted Dennis Bergkamp's outstanding strike at Newcastle as the Gunners' Greatest Goal.

The Dutch legend has a bulging portfolio of classic goals but this was a true masterpiece. It summed up the vision, speed of thought, deftness of touch and clinical finishing that Bergkamp brought to Arsenal for more than a decade.

And it's worth noting that this goal did not decorate some meaningless game. Arsenal were in a battle royal for the Premier League title and Bergkamp's strike, after 11 minutes at St. James Park, set up a priceless 2-0 win two months before the end of the season.

The move itself involved three of Arsenal's 'big beasts'. Patrick Vieira started a typically fluid counter-attack, picking out Bergkamp from deep inside his own half. The Dutchman sprayed the ball wide to Robert Pires and then stormed through the centre while the French winger made progress down the left.

Pires cut inside looking for options and spotted Bergkamp on the edge of the box; he duly arrowed a pass towards the Dutchman.

Bergkamp was on the move from right to left and had Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas in close attention. The ball came at speed towards his left foot and, in an instant, Bergkamp worked out the best way to craft a goalscoring opportunity. He flicked the ball one side of Dabizas and went round the other side, showing great strength to hold off the defender.

Having shown incredible skill and strength, Bergkamp still needed the composure to finish off what he had started. He coolly dispatched the ball past Shay Given and into the bottom corner.

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal reached the Quarter-Finals of the Carling Cup for the seventh successive season with a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

This was an action-packed, top-quality affair between the fringe versions of these two ‘Big Four' outfits and all the goals were of the highest calibre.

Fran Merida fired home a bullet of a shot in the 19th minute but Emiliano Insua responded shortly afterwards with an even better effort - a dipping volley from 25 yards.

Neither side was prepared to take a backward step after that. Although they matched each other blow for blow Arsenal had the edge and it was no surprise when they took the lead five minutes after break. This time Nicklas Bendtner finished off another slick move.

Liverpool pushed forward towards the end and Ryan Babel should have tapped home a cross from Dirk Kuyt with 11 minutes to go.

However, Wenger's men deserved their luck tonight. They were classy when they needed to be and were only under real pressure when they were trying to see out the game.

This was not a young Arsenal side but it was very much a second-string. The poise and efficiency of this result suggests the Frenchman has strength in depth for the Premier League and Champions League campaigns to come.

For once, Wenger's Carling Cup XI was more experienced than the team they were facing. Samir Nasri (broken leg) and Lukasz Fabianski (knee) were playing their first games of the season after medium-term injuries. Eduardo and Bendtner were also given a start after recent spells on the sidelines. Mikael Silvestre, Fran Merida, Kieran Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey had spent a lot of the season on the bench for the first team so they needed competition. Kerrea Gilbert was now a "veteran youngster" - if the term exists - so the most interesting inclusion was Craig Eastmond. The 18-year-old was mainly known as a right back in the Reserves. Tonight he was deputising for Alex Song as Arsenal's holding midfielder.

The rest of the youngsters in the squad were named on the bench. Jack Wilshere (ankle) and Carlos Vela (knee) missed out through injury.

Liverpool's starting line-up was littered with players who had been on the fringes of their first-team - Andriy Voronin, Babel, Insua and David Ngog. The only regular was captain Kuyt. However Rafa Benitez did name the likes of Yossi Benayoun, Pepe Reina, Andrea Dossena and debutant Alberto Aquilani on the bench.

Emirates Stadium was packed tonight. Tickets had been on sale for as little as £10 for adults and £5 for children. Consequently, they had not lasted long.

The opening quarter was adventurous and energetic. It seems as though the impatience of youth was overtaking both sides.

Liverpool had the clearest chance. In the ninth minute, Voronin set Ngog free in the right-hand channel. His backheel gave right back Philipp Degen a sight of goal. The Swiss international snatched as his chance and drove wide of the far post.

Arsenal took another seven minutes to forage a decent response. Merida freed Gibbs who tapped a pass into the path of the sprinting Bendtner. His one-two with Eduardo so nearly brought dividends.

There was a feeling that the home side were starting to flex their muscles. And they showed their true strength in the 19th minute. Eastmond robbed Voronin after a throw-in on the right. Merida collected the ball on the corner of the area, took a couple of paces forward and rifled home a rising drive high into the net via the inside of the post.

The Spaniard slid towards the corner flag before being enveloped by ecstatic team-mates. Television pictures showed Cesc Fabregas, a fellow Catalan, was the first on his feet in the crowd.

Although Senderos made an important interception from Voronin shortly afterwards, it seemed like Arsenal were going to kick-on from here.

They didn't.

If anything Liverpool's equaliser was even more out of the blue than Merida's effort. Babel's knock-down fell to Insua 30 yards out. The left-back met the ball with a dipping volley that flew over the stranded Fabianski.

Arsenal recovered well from the blow. Bendtner drove into both the sidenetting and the keeper's arms while Merida nearly profited from a sweeping move orchestrated by Eduardo.

Four minutes from the break, Nasri released Eastmond on the right. His cut-back so nearly reached the Croatian in the centre. A couple of corners later, Diego Cavalieri missed his punch and a good old-fashion goalmouth melee ensued. It only ended when Bendtner swivelled a shot into the midriff of the lucky keeper.

Liverpool had looked decent on the break but when the whistle blew Arsenal were ahead on points if not on the scoresheet.

Despite that, the visitors began the half on the offensive. In the opening minutes they peppered the home side with crosses who, until they scored, looked to be slightly shaken.

The goal, however, was class. It all started with Eastmond's sweeping ball out to Merida on the left-hand side. He speared a pass to Ramsey on the penalty spot. The Welshman fed Bendtner who created a yard of space and lashed the ball high into the net.

Again Arsenal looked good for the advantage. Again Liverpool pushed them back. Voronin and Degen weaved a web of intricate passes between themselves before the Ukrainian fired inches wide of the far post.

Babel's free-kick was easily saved by Fabianski midway through the half and Tony Spearing sliced an effort well wide.

With 15 minutes left, Wenger brought on Sanchez Watt and Mark Randall for Bendtner and Eastmond. Liverpool brought on Aquilani, a move that brought raptures from the travelling support.

They should have been cheering again with 11 minutes left. Kuyt raced into space on the right and crossed low into the area.

Inexplicably Babel failed to nudge the ball home.

Eduardo fired cross-goal but Liverpool were now going for broke and Voronin's vicious drive was scooped up by Fabianski.

Liverpool's desperation grew as the seconds ticked by while Arsenal were happy to play the ball into the corners when they could.

The visitors had claims for a penalty in stoppage time when Aquilani's overhead kick cannoned back off Senderos. It certainly hit the Swiss defender's arms but from utterly point-blank range. The whistle blew a minute or so later.

Arsenal were through on a night that suggested Wenger's squad might have hidden depths.

MATCH REPORT :

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal moved up to third in the Premier League despite allowing a two-goal lead to slip at West Ham on Sunday.

First-half strikes from Robin van Persie and William Gallas should have given the visitors a straight-forward victory.

Their hosts seemed to be struggling for ideas and confidence on the day. However, as at Alkmaar in midweek, Arsenal dropped points after being caught late on.

West Ham grabbed a lifeline with 14 minutes left after Vito Mannone parried Valon Behrami’s free-kick onto the head of Carlton Cole, who scored from close range.

Four minutes later, Alex Song was adjudged to have touched Cole and substitute Alessandro Diamanti gleefully equalised from the spot.

Scott Parker’s dismissal clipped the wings of West Ham’s chances of completing the comeback. The home side were also indebted to keeper Robert Green for a stupendous save from Van Persie in injury time.

In midweek, Arsenal’s profligacy cost them little in the long-term. However this could be a more damaging draw.

They had an opportunity to steal ground and they could not take it. This can only be seen as two points dropped.

The stands at Upton Park only began to fill up 30 minutes before kick-off. The bars inside and outside the ground were packed with fans glued to the crucial clash at Anfield. Liverpool’s victory over Manchester United gave Arsenal another opportunity to catch the teams at the top of the table.

The side Wenger entrusted with that task was the same one as Tuesday night. That meant Mannone kept his place despite the return to fitness of Manuel Almunia. The Spaniard was on the bench again.

He was joined by a trio of fit-again players – Eduardo (thigh), Nicklas Bendtner (groin) and, in his first appearance of the season, Samir Nasri (broken leg).

In many ways this was enemy territory for Wenger’s men but, today, an enboldened Arsenal were willing to go at West Ham straight from the off.

In the opening eight minutes, Van Persie saw a backheel blocked and a rising drive tipped over at the near post.

West Ham had pressure but they also had the look of a side who had not won since the opening day of the season.

Teams in that position play reasonably well then concede easy goals – and that is precisely what happened to the home side.

In the 16th minute, Abou Diaby sprung Bacary Sagna on the right. His delicious cross curled away from Green, who followed it out but could only get the merest touch. The ball fell onto the foot of Van Persie, who, almost apologetically volleyed home his sixth goal of the season into the empty net.

West Ham’s response was admirable. In Cole, they had a willing workhorse in the forward channels. Midway through the half the confusion he created on the edge of the area saw Mark Noble wriggle free on the right and fire low into the sidenetting.

However Van Persie was still the biggest thorn in their side. Midway through the half, Andrey Arshavin sent him clear and only a timely invention by James Tomkins prevented the striker scoring. Shortly afterwards he nudged a diving header just wide.

Although Arsenal were the better side they were hardly water-tight at the back. Just past the half-hour, Noble’s free-kick rebounded off the wall and when the ball came back in to the area, Cole slid a header just wide.

This was looking like Tuesday all over again. Arsenal in control and yet not prepared to put the game in a stranglehold. That changed eight minutes before the break.

The visitors won a corner on the right. Van Persie sent it over to the far post and Gallas nodded home. It was a simple goal not worthy of greater description and yet West Ham’s defence had neither the wit nor wisdom to keep it out.

Upton Park was very quiet. It was clearly full of worried fans.

As if to confirm their superiority, Vermaelen roared down the left like a winger only to see his cross drift long and then Eboue weaved in from the right before testing Green with a low shot.

Arsenal went into the break with a considerable cushion.

The visitors were more subdued after the break. It was as if they were waiting for West Ham to test them.

Arshavin, who had been quiet until now, darted past his marker and fired a friendless cutback across goal. Just before the hour, Zola brought on Alessandro Diamanti. The Italian enlivened proceeds with a couple of dips from distance.

Fabregas did likewise shortly afterwards but his swerving effort drifted wide of the post at the last second.

Cole was still West Ham’s best hope. In the 65th minute, he swivelled six yards out before firing over the bar.

However Eboue fired behind from the acutest angle then, after Gael Clichy had blocked a shot from Zavon Hines, Arshavin forced a full-length save from Green with a trademark drive from 25 yards.

Arsenal were coasting and in control. But, as at Alkmaar, they were caught out. Diaby was adjudged to have fouled Hines 10 yards outside the area. Behrami curled the ball towards the near post and Mannone could only parry the ball back into the area where Cole nodded home from close range.

Suddenly, it was game on again when Arsenal should have been home and dry.

West Ham had claims for a penalty almost immediately when Parker went through. But although Gallas hung out his leg, there appeared to be little contact.

With 11 minutes left, the home side did get their spot kick. Song was adjudged to have clipped Cole and Diamanti fired home the penalty.

West Ham now fancied the win and stormed forward. However, they were reduced to 10 men with six minutes left after Parker received his second yellow card.

The dismissal curtailed West Ham’s comeback and, in fact, it was Arsenal who had the best chance to steal the points.

Eboue crossed from the right and Van Persie’s diving header was somehow turned aside by Green.

It was the last act of a disappointing and sobering drama.

Player Rating and Analysis

By 1970’s Gooner

It’s simply not good enough. To have blown away a lead once and then to go and do it again a few days later, in the same manner is beyond belief. Don’t tell me that we need to go three up to feel safe because this is what it looks like it at the moment.

It was really pathetic, going 2-0 up in the first half and not being able to close the game out. The players thought that the game was over after the first 45 minutes. They started playing in second and third gear, not really interested enough to put the game beyond reach.

So the young squad still has a lot to learn, apparently.

Mannone

I still think that he will be a great goalkeeper for Arsenal but he was clearly at fault for their first goal. He should have pushed the ball out for a corner not bring it back into play again.

This goal started their revival and it is almost impossible to move up a gear when you’ve been in a lethargic state for a big part of the second half.

If Almunia was fit he should have been brought back into the team. 5

Sagna

Was a lot better this game. Went forward enough and his crosses were much improved resulting in Arsenal’s first goal. 7

Gallas

Looks invigorated this season and got another goal today. 7

Vermaelen

The centre back that Arsenal needed. Intelligent, physical, a good passer of the ball as well as having an eye for goal. 7

Clichy

Had an average game defensively but was not as good going forward. The quality of his crosses left a lot to be desired. 6

Song

Was having another strong game with his ability to shield the defence and make the simple passes to his forwards or Fabregas. However he tends to foul unnecessarily sometimes and it was fairly stupid of him to do so in the box giving away the penalty. 6

Fabregas

Was playing in second gear from the beginning of the game. Drifted in out of the game and generally was not the usual Cesc we all know. 5

Diaby

Has cut out the fancy stuff in recent games and this has resulted in much better performances. 6

Arshavin

Looked disinterested and like Fabregas was not in the centre of things as we have come to expect from the little Russian demon. 5

Van Persie

One of the few that played well tonight. Scored the first goal and generally led the line well. Nearly scored the winner with a header that was saved by Green in the latter stages of the game. He was however no helped a lot by the below par performances of Fabregas and Arshavin. 7

Eboue

He is a much improved player this season but I feel his inability to make the right decisions at important moments will always hamper his effectiveness. Now if Rosicky was fit or even if Eduardo was in the team we would have probably won the game. 6

'The Invincibles' go 49 games unbeaten

Played 49, Won 36, Drawn 13, Lost None. The Arsenal squad which set a new unbeaten league record between May 2003 and October 2004 will live long in the memory and forever in the history books.

The Gunners' historic run actually began amid the ruins of a failed Premiership bid. Arsenal shook off the disappointment of a home defeat against Leeds which handed Manchester United the title to thrash Southampton 6-1 at Highbury on May 7, 2003. No one had an inkling about what would follow.

Arsenal started the 2003/04 campaign in style with four straight wins but almost came unstuck at Old Trafford in game No 8 of their run. Ruud van Nistelrooy's late penalty cannoned off the crossbar and Arsenal escaped with a 0-0 draw. It was the closest shave of the entire 49-game sequence.

For the most part Arsenal brushed aside all-comers home and away. There were memorable wins at Elland Road, Stamford Bridge and Anfield, plus some great goals along the way. Robert Pires' winner at Liverpool in October 2003 was one of the best, while Thierry Henry produced classic after classic.

Arsène Wenger had built a team to compare with any side in Europe. With Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure at the back, Patrick Vieira and Pires in midfield and Henry partnering Dennis Bergkamp up front, Arsenal had too much steel and too much style for their Premiership rivals.

They had bags of character too. After being dumped out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the space of a few days, Arsenal bounced back from a 2-1 half-time deficit against Liverpool at Highbury in April 2004 to win 4-2 and stay on course for the title.

Later that month Arsenal clinched the Premiership with a 2-2 draw at Tottenham. Success rarely tasted sweeter but there was still history to be made: Arsenal duly avoided defeat against Birmingham, Portsmouth, Fulham and Leicester to complete the first unbeaten league campaign since Preston's in the 19th century.

Nottingham Forest's record of 42 games unbeaten had stood for 26 years. Arsenal matched it on August 22, 2004 but so nearly blew their chance, digging deep to turn a 3-1 deficit into a resounding 5-3 victory.

Three days later Henry, Cesc Fabregas and Jose Antonio Reyes were on target as Arsenal wrote themselves into the history books by beating Blackburn at Highbury. Wenger's team extended their record to 49 games, scoring freely and playing some of the finest football the English game has seen.

The run ended in controversy at Old Trafford as a harshly-awarded penalty spurred Manchester United to a 2-0 win in October 2004. But that defeat did nothing to dim Arsenal's achievement. Wenger's 'Invincibles' will never be forgotten.

MATCH REPORT :

By Richard Clarke in Alkmaar

An equaliser deep into injury time denied Arsenal all three points at AZ Alkmaar on Tuesday night but Arsène Wenger’s side still have control of Champions League Group H.

The visitors seemed in charge for much of this evening’s game. There was no sympathy for an AZ who had been stricken with financial problems in recent days.

Arsenal simply soaked up the passion exhibited by the home team and home crowd before exploiting the first real opening that came their way.

That came nine minutes before half-time when Andrey Arshavin and Robin van Persie set up Cesc Fabregas to slot home at the far post.

AZ kept battling but Arsenal seemed to have seen them off until the third minute of injury time when David Mendes da Silva volleyed home into the top corner after a ‘Hail Mary” free-kick was nodded down into his path.

It was a deep disappointment and ended Arsenal’s run of seven straight wins. They now only lead Group H by one point when, a couple of minutes earlier they seemed set to go five clear.

Still, despite what happened here, Wenger’s men are still heavy favourites to stay on top for the final three fixtures.

There were three changes from the side that had barged past Birmingham on Saturday. Having recovered from his ankle injury, Gael Clichy replaced Kieran Gibbs at left back.

Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky had both picked up knee problems in that game so Arshavin and Bacary Sagna came in with Emmanuel Eboue moving on to the right side of midfield to accommodate the French full back.

Yet again, Vito Mannone retained his place in goal while Manuel Almunia was on the bench.

A booming bassline from the PA did a great job of rousing the crowd before kick-off but, in truth, these are tough times for the Dutch champions. They had removed the logo of their sponsors, DSB Bank, for this game after they were declared bankrupt. It had been reported that founder Dirk Scheringa was going follow suit with DSB Beheer NV, the holding company which owns AZ. If that happened it was anticipated that the club could be put up for sale.

Banners proclaiming “We’ll never surrender”, “AZ forever”, “Resistance” and “Even without money Dirk is our hero” lined this compact, atmospheric stadium. If ever a set of supporters could win points for spirit, this was it.

However, on the pitch, it was much tougher. AZ were sixth in the Eredivisie and bottom of Group H. They needed an injection of points and money. The determination, it seemed, could look after itself.

The situation drove AZ forward in the opening stages. But, despite the roars of the crowd for even the most aimless ball forward, they produced nothing.

Arsenal had the strut of a side that had won its last seven games and were prepared to wait for their opportunity. One knocked in the eighth minute.

A flowing move saw Abou Diaby escape down the left and cross to the far post. Van Persie collected and slipped inside his marker to give himself time. In the end he may have had too much. When he eventually got his shot away it was straight at Sergio Romero and the keeper held on.

Until the 25th minute, AZ were smoke without fire. The first effort worthy of the name came when Mendes da Silva fed Mounir El Hamdaoui in the right-hand channel and the Moroccan striker fizzed a shot just over the bar.

However, almost immediately, Eboue stole the ball on the right and curled a cross to Arshavin at the far post. Typically he tried something ambitious and lifted his shot over the keeper towards the far corner from the acutest of angles. He so nearly pulled it off but the shot drifted on to the roof of the net.

The little Russian was at his impish best tonight and, almost inevitably, he created the opening goal. In the 36th minute, right back Niklas Moisander allowed a regulation square pass to bobble away from him midway inside the AZ half. Arshavin thieved the ball and released Van Persie, whose pass across the face of goal was tapped home at the far post by Fabregas.

The goal quietened the AZ crowd for the first time this evening. Van Persie nearly added another just before the interval when his vicious left-foot shot was deflected over the bar off the fists of keeper Romero.

The Dutchman seemed determined to punish his countrymen tonight. Nine minutes after half-time, Eboue won a free-kick 25 yards out and Van Persie’s left-footed curler brought a full-length save from Romero.

However, just when you thought AZ’s challenge was about to fade, they rallied. Clichy was booked for hauling down El Hamdaoui and then in the 71st minute an under-pressure Diaby nodded onto his own bar from a corner.

Yet, as the minutes ticked by, Arsenal re-asserted control once more and substitute Carlos Vela had claims for a penalty six minutes from time when he was brought down by Moussa Dembele.

Arshavin forced the best out of Romero at the death and, though AZ kept going, Arsenal looked to have held them at bay.

But then, in the 93rd minute, Arshavin fouled Moreno deep inside the AZ half. Stijn Schaars leathered the free-kick forward, Graziano Pelle nodded down and Mendes da Silva lashed home the volley.

This was a draw that felt like a defeat but fortunately it should not affect their chances of making the Knockout Stages.
